Recognizing Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms and Seeking Treatment

Type 1 diabetes (also referred to as juvenile-onset diabetes) is a condition primarily affecting children and young adults. This type of diabetes is caused when a person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin. Patients with type 1 diabetes require daily insulin injections, careful meal planning, and regular exercise to treat and manage the disease. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Dehydration
  • Unplanned weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugars)
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, resulting in dizziness, confusion, etc.)
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA – high levels of ketones in the body due to a lack of insulin)

Recognizing Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms and Seeking Treatment

People over the age of 45 who are obese or pregnant and members of certain ethnic groups (African American, Latino, and Native American) are more at risk for developing type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes) than others. This type causes the body to be unable to produce or use insulin properly. Thanks to Americans’ unhealthy tendency to eat a diet rich in salt, sugar, and fats, type 2 diabetes is on the national rise. Treatment for type 2 diabetes typically includes medications (insulin and other kinds), adhering to a stricter low-carb diet, and regular exercise. Although not always noticeable, type 2 diabetes symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Unsatiated thirst or hunger
  • Chronic dry mouth
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Itchy skin
  • Slow-healing wounds, infections, cuts, or bruises
  • Frequent headaches or ear infections
  • Hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugars)
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, resulting in dizziness, confusion, etc.)
  • Unplanned weight loss or gain
  • Diabetic neuropathy (tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands, legs, or feet)
  • Frequent yeast, kidney, or urinary tract infections
  • Kidney issues (dark or bloody urine, frothy urine, or pain in the lower back)
  • High blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Frequent respiratory infections, including tuberculosis or the flu
  • Impotence or erectile dysfunction
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
